Change asks people to leave competence and certainty for an unfamiliar way of working. A transformation plan can define the destination, but only motivation creates the sustained discretionary effort needed to reach it.

Purpose, progress and participation

Three conditions reinforce one another. Purpose explains why the change matters. Progress gives people evidence that effort is producing movement. Participation gives them agency in shaping how the change works in practice.

  • Purpose: connect the work to customers, colleagues and the enterprise mission.
  • Progress: make small, meaningful outcomes visible and frequent.
  • Participation: involve the people closest to the work in designing the future.

Leadership makes motivation credible

Communication cannot compensate for contradictory choices. People believe the transformation when leaders fund it, remove barriers, change incentives and model the behaviors they ask from others. Motivation is not a campaign; it is the accumulated result of what the organization says, does and rewards.
